Where your attention goes often shapes how you experience your day. Before responding to emails, conversations, or responsibilities, taking a few moments to notice what already has your attention can create space for greater clarity and intention. This mindfulness for attention practice invites you to pause, reconnect with your breath, and consciously choose how you want to show up.
Listen to the full practice here (~8 min).
This episode is a recording from a live Journey You Own Meditation Gathering. As you listen, you may notice natural pauses and gentle references to the shared practice, reflecting the experience of practicing together in community.
The practice begins and ends with the sound of a bell, offering a gentle cue to enter and leave meditation.
The meditation opens with several deep breaths, inviting you to settle into the present moment. As awareness follows the natural rhythm of breathing, you are encouraged to notice any tension carried from the night or earlier activities. The breath becomes a steady anchor, offering support as you soften areas of tightness and reconnect with your body.
Once grounded in the breath, attention shifts toward the mind. Rather than trying to control your thoughts, you are invited to observe where your attention naturally goes. What is occupying your awareness? What intention do you want to carry into the day? And beneath that intention, what motivation is guiding you?
From this place of embodied awareness, the meditation offers an opportunity to form an aspiration. This aspiration may take the shape of a wish, a new conversation, or a commitment that you symbolically offer to the universe as you prepare for the day ahead.
The practice concludes by releasing all thoughts and aspirations, allowing the mind to rest in open awareness. In these quiet moments, there is nothing to solve or accomplish. There is simply the experience of breathing, being present, and carrying that presence into whatever comes next.
This meditation serves as a reminder that while you may not always control what captures your attention, you can cultivate awareness of where it goes and gently choose to return to what matters most.
“Notice what the underlying motivation might be, and where your mind’s attention is being drawn.”
After listening, you might reflect on:
- Where did your attention naturally settle today?
- What motivation was beneath the intention you chose?
- How did returning to your body influence your perspective?
