Loving-Kindness Meditation for Compassion

So much of our inner life is spent striving, planning, or replaying what has already happened. Compassion, however, invites us into a different rhythm — one of softness, kindness, and connection. This guided evening meditation offers a chance to settle, to turn toward yourself with warmth, and to extend that same compassion outward to others.

Listen to the full practice here (~29 min).

What to Expect

The practice begins with a few deep breaths and a gentle body scan, helping you notice where you may be carrying tension and inviting the breath to soften those spaces. From there, the meditation turns to a traditional Metta, or loving-kindness, practice. You’ll be guided to bring an image of yourself to mind, perhaps as you are now or as a younger version of yourself, and quietly repeat compassionate phrases:

May I be happy
May I be healthy
May I be free from harm
May I live a life of ease

These phrases act as anchors, gently reconnecting you to your own capacity for care and kindness.

After offering these wishes to yourself, the meditation invites you to extend the same phrases to others. This may be a loved one, a group of people, or beings who may be suffering. As you repeat the phrases, you are encouraged to notice the sensations in your body, how it feels to generate compassion, and how the act of offering kindness shifts your presence.

The session closes by releasing the visualization and resting in open awareness. From this space of stillness, you return to the breath, carrying forward a sense of ease and connection.

As always, the practice begins and ends with a bell, a gentle cue to settle into presence and later return with awareness.

After listening, here are a few prompts you might reflect on:

  • What was it like to offer kindness to myself?
  • Did the phrases feel natural, or did they bring up resistance?
  • How did my body respond when extending compassion to others?
