Redefining Change with Open Awareness

Change can feel like a wave you saw coming, or like a sudden turn you did not plan for. If you are in a season of transition, this practice gives you a quiet place to notice what is here without needing to fix it right away.

Listen to the full practice here (~20 min).

This practice comes from a live Journey You Own Meditation Gathering, so you may notice natural pauses and gentle references to the group as you settle into shared practice.

In this session, you are first invited to arrive exactly as you are. You take a few moments to tune into your body and your breath, then gently notice what thoughts are present. Rather than wrestling with the mind, you practice letting thoughts arise, pass by, and make space for what comes next. You may even imagine yourself as a compassionate observer, watching your inner landscape with a little more distance and ease.

From there, the practice opens into a sense of spaciousness, a moment of open awareness like a blank slate. The theme of change is introduced softly, so you can explore what the word brings up in you: thoughts, emotions, sensations, and any places your body holds tightness. You are encouraged to notice where attachment to the past shows up, where hesitation about the future might live, and what it feels like to meet all of it from the present moment.

You will also reflect on what you are ready to release, and what you want to carry forward. Change is not treated as a demand to become someone new overnight. Instead, you are invited to redefine what change means for you, and to consider how it can support your next step with steadiness and care. The practice begins and ends with a bell, a gentle cue to settle into presence at the start and return with awareness at the end.

“Notice the vastness of sitting in open awareness.”

As the session closes, you return to the breath and move through a quick body scan from head to toe. Breathing into any tight areas can help you soften your grip and reconnect with your physical grounding. You spend a few final minutes in stillness, then set an aspiration. It might be an intention, a prayer, or a simple wish you place out into the universe, naming how you want to meet change from here.

After listening, you might reflect on:

  • What part of change feels most alive in you right now, and where do you notice it in your body?
  • What are you ready to let go of from the past, and what do you want to carry forward?
  • What aspiration feels true for the next small step you can take?
