body scan meditation

What does it feel like when breathing becomes more than something you notice in your nose, chest, or belly? This body scan meditation gradually widens your awareness from small, specific sensations into the experience of the whole body breathing. Rather than asking you to control the breath, the practice invites curiosity about what is already happening within a living, breathing body.

Listen to the full practice here (~9 min).

This meditation comes from a live Journey You Own Meditation Gathering, so you may notice natural pauses and gentle references to shared practice. Give yourself time within those spaces to notice what is present without needing to find a particular sensation or experience.

The practice begins with an invitation to notice the breath as it enters and leaves, becoming curious about qualities you may not usually pay attention to.

Is the breath warm or cool?

Does it seem to have a texture?

Can you imagine a color?

There is no right answer. These questions are simply ways of becoming more interested in the experience of breathing.

The practice then becomes less about following a fixed path through the body and more about listening.

“Notice the experience of the body being breathed in its entirety.”

This is the deeper shift within the practice. Instead of focusing on one body part at a time, you are invited to experience the body as a whole, from the fingertips to the crown of the head and down through the feet.

For a moment, there is less need to think about breathing as something you are doing. You can simply notice the living body being breathed.

In the final part of the meditation, even this whole-body awareness is gently released. Thoughts and the experience of the body are allowed to soften as you rest for a time in open awareness. The practice begins and ends with a bell, offering a gentle cue as you enter the meditation and later return through a few deeper breaths, the body, and the ground beneath you.

After listening, you might reflect on:

  • Where did you feel the breath most clearly in your body?
  • What changed as your attention widened from one area to the whole body?
  • What was it like to experience the body being breathed rather than focusing on making the breath happen?

You do not need to feel every part of the body clearly. Begin wherever sensation is easiest to notice. Stay curious. Let awareness widen in its own time, and notice what it is like to simply be here in a body that is already breathing.
